Spring often brings a focus on skincare, and after months of cold weather, many complexions can feel dull, dry and in need of a reset.
At the same time, juggling a busy lifestyle in London, from work deadlines to marathon training, had left me feeling just as depleted as my skin. So when I heard about the ‘Validation Facial’ at Lush Spa – a 60 minute, bespoke treatment designed to support both skin health and emotional wellbeing – I was curious to see whether it could deliver a true spring reset, inside and out.
The process
A Validation Facial emphasises the idea that wellbeing is more than skin-deep.
I am told that the products used are fresh and handmade, paired with choreographed massage, expert application techniques and a carefully designed soundscape, inspired by the founder Mark Constantine’s love for bird watching and the idea of training your ears to understand sound.
As I arrived I was greeted by my Lush therapist who would be carrying out my facial. As someone with sensitive skin and a degree of scepticism about facials in general, it immediately felt different from any treatment I’d had before.
Instead of heading straight into the facial room, we began with a consultation, something I am not used to when booking a standard facial. But this one however was entirely tailored.
My therapist asked how my skin had been feeling. After a long winter, I admitted it was a little dry and dehydrated. Then came a more unexpected question. I was asked to choose three words describing how I wanted both my skin and body to feel. I landed on energised, calm and bright.
“We will start with some inhalations using Dream Time Temple Balm,” they explained. “It has lavender and chamomile which will help you arrive, settle in, and feel cosy and relaxed.”
I was asked to choose products based purely on their description and scent. For my exfoliator, I picked Blueberry Roly Poly, which my therapist described as offering ‘gentle exfoliation’, alongside chamomile and aloe vera to soothe and moisturise.
The treatment extended beyond just the face. It also included hand and arm massage, as well as work on the neck and chest.
“We’ll incorporate both hot and cold stones,” they informed me. “I’ll focus on acupressure points and lymphatic drainage to boost circulation and puffiness.”
Once in the treatment room, I settled onto the bed and began to switch off from the outside world. As they worked, a soundtrack of ocean waves filled the space, interwoven with recorded reflections from the brand’s founders, an immersive touch that made the experience feel both relaxing and intentional.
The result
I expected to hear direct words of affirmation throughout the treatment, but instead the experience was more subtle.
The soundtrack blended waves and birdsong with repeated words such as ‘calm’, ‘confidence’, and ‘peace’, woven gently into the background.
At some point I did drift off to sleep which is a sign in itself of how relaxed I felt. When I opened my eyes at the end of the 60 minutes, the first thing I noticed wasn’t my skin, but how I felt. Noticeably calmer and more switched off from the outside world.
Visibly, my skin looked brighter and more refreshed, aligning with the three words I had chosen at the start. But while the goal had been to feel more confident, it was the sense of calm that stood out the most to me.
I later learned that, while I was asleep, my arms had been moved through gentle stretching motions which is incorporated into the treatment to help improve posture and leave clients feeling more physically open and in turn confident.
The thought process behind it
Curious about the concept, I spoke with Lush Spa’s lead Kayley Thomas and global spa manager Jemma Clarke about how the treatment came to life and its relevance in today’s society.
Thomas explained that this facial was developed around 16 years ago in collaboration with behavioural therapist Lady Helen Kennedy.
“It was created to be a facial where people can come to get a bit of validation,” she said. “The idea is that beauty is deeper than the skin and if you feel confident, you’re less distracted by superficial things and more able to be yourself.”
The personalised consultation plays a key role in that process.
Clarke adds: “The tailored consultation is to look at the benefits of the ingredients on someone and how it can affect them personally so they come out feeling how they wanted to. You can usually see people’s confidence growing throughout it and the therapists are trained to cleverly weave the words you choose at the start in to the whole session.
“The use of language is also carefully considered. The three words chosen at the start are subtly woven throughout the session – from the consultation to the soundtrack and final moments of the treatment.
“There’s a lot of subconscious work happening,” Thomas says. “We’re mindful not to repeat words too often, but to introduce them at key points so they resonate.”
Verdict
While I didn’t fully experience the confidence-boosting element the facial is designed to promote, I did notice a shift in how relaxed and switched off I felt by the end of the session.
My skin appeared brighter and more refreshed. Overall, the experience changed how I view facials, as this one focused on a more tailored, holistic approach.
For those looking for a gentle reset this spring, particularly if stress is taking a toll physically and mentally, this offers something a little different.
