Wayne Pivac, like Townsend, has inspired a spike in form for his side, making today’s game a fascinating test for both with the opportunity to take that next step. The winner here will likely provide the stiffest competition to France to win outright this season, though England will linger after responding to defeat against Italy.

Nick Tompkins maintains Wales are “ready to go” here, despite centre options George North, Johnny Williams and Jonathan Davies all unavailable, in addition to blindside flankers Dan Lydiate, Josh Navidi and Josh Macleod: "What can you say to a guy like that who is just about to get his debut?" Tompkins said, of Macleod's situation. "A lot of players picked up knocks in the game [against Ireland] last weekend - but we are all ready to go. We will crack on. We under-performed in the (Autumn) Nations Cup and we feel like we did in last year's Six Nations as well. We feel like we owe ourselves, the fans and a lot of people performances. I am not going to say results or outcomes - I think we owe them performances, and the rest takes care of itself. For us, that is definitely the attitude. We are going one game at a time, but hopefully we can ride the momentum from the Ireland game going into this game against a Scotland side with a lot of motivation."

    Scotland 3-3 Wales, 14 minutes

Chris Harris fades to the outside as Stuart Hogg puts nice zip on his pass, injecting himself into the line as a second distributing pair of hands. Harris is hauled down, and Finn Russell again looks for an angular kick for the spaces in the left-hand corner of the Welsh backfield defence, but the acreage is well-covered, and the mark is claimed.

    Scotland 3-3 Wales, 13 minutes

That was a head knock for Blade Thomson, and having looked unsteady, he is going off for an HIA, at the very least. Gary Graham on in his place. A blow for Scotland but Graham has been in fine fettle at Newcastle.

    Scotland 3-3 Wales, 12 minutes

A worry for Scotland as Blade Thomson stays down after a heavy post-kick-off collision, but he’s back on his feet and ready to chase after a Finn Russell punt upfield.

Dan Biggar’s kick is more adventurous, finding Louis Rees-Zammit on the right with a fine crossfield attempt, but Scotland mark it well. In-field the Welsh carriers are again met by a fast approaching Scottish line, and the small and stout Hamish Watson limpets on to the ball and holds a carrier up in the air. Maul called, maul stalled, Scottish scrum.

PENALTY! SCOTLAND 3-3 Wales (Finn Russell, 10 minutes)

...and Finn Russell evens it up. A simple starter for Scotland’s kicker, too, and we are all-square after the first ten minutes.

    Scotland 0-3 Wales, 9 minutes

Another penalty against Wales, Alun Wyn Jones having a Saturday evening nap at the bottom of a ruck after making a tackle. He might have been trapped in, but showed little attempt to extricate himself. To the posts...

    Scotland 0-3 Wales, 8 minutes

A chance for Scotland now to advance their first attacking claim after Louis Rees-Zammit contacts Matt Fagerson prematurely as the number eight comes down from catching a high ball. Seven-metre lineout, or thereabouts.

A brief pause while a couple of vital bits of business are attended to - Aaron Wainwright requires a new contact lens, and the assistant referees are deemed to look too similar to the Scottish players in their navy tracksuit tops. One adds another white polo on top in the cold, the other sheds his jacket entirely and bares his arm in the cold.

PENALTY! Scotland 0-3 WALES (Leigh Halfpenny, 7 minutes)

Over it goes, and just as a week ago, Leigh Halfpenny puts Wales into an early lead. Three early penalties against Scotland after being so far on top of England in that regard - let’s see how they settle in.

    Scotland 0-0 Wales, 5 minutes

More strong defence from Scotland, pushing Wales out of their 22, but defensive leader Chris Harris is too quick off the line in the 13 channel. He’s whistled for offside, and Alun Wyn Jones points at the sticks.

    1613235111

    Scotland 0-0 Wales, 4 minutes

Scotland’s defence, drilled by a Welshman in Steve Tandy, has began in similarly ferocious fashion to a week ago, hard off the line to chop down the Welsh carriers behind the gainline.
