Hideki Matsuyama takes a four-shot lead into the final round of The Masters 2021 after a blistering round of 65 yesterday as he aims to become the first male winner of a major in history.

With a blistering back nine that featured an eagle at 15 and birdies at 16 and 17, Matsuyama left the likes of Justin Rose, Xander Schauffele and debutant Will Zalatoris trailing after a 77-minute rain delay significantly softened Augusta’s greens and left them vulnerable to aggressive play.

Rose was left clinging on to remain in contention as he appeared to completely lose his rhythm on the back nine following the pause but managed to hole several key putts to stay at -7. It will be Schauffele who partners Matsuyama in the final group, though, after the American surged into the chasing pack with a 61ft eagle putt at 15. Schauffele already boasts a second-place finish from 2019 and will be desperate to go one further.

That certainly remains a possibility with Matsuyama having never held the lead after 54 holes at a major, with that fact no doubt carrying an added burden of pressure. If he is to slip up early, that will bring a further host of players into touching distance, including Corey Connors, who had a hole in one at the sixth yesterday, as well as 2015 champion Jordan Spieth.
