Follow all the action as Hideki Matsuyamadefends a four-shot lead heading into the final round of The Masters 2021.
Justin Rosehad been in control of the year’s first major until a weather delay during yesterday’s third round changed the context of the tournament entirely, with rainfall leaving the greens substantially softer. After the players returned to the course, Matsuyama produced a blistering back nine to finish with a bogey-free 65 and leave himself in pole position to become the first Japanese man to win a major in history.
After an afternoon of heightened drama, though, that will be no easy task heading into the final round. A four-shot lead can disappear in a matter of minutes, as the world’s best players know from painful experience, and Justin Rose, Xander Schauffele and Marc Leishman all sit at seven-under-par. They are joined there by Will Zalatoris, with the 24-year-old American attempting to become the first debutant winner in 42 years. One further back lies Corey Conners, who benefitted from a hole in one at the 6th yesterday, and then there’s 2015 champion Jordan Spieth, who will need to produce a remarkable round in order to clinch a second Green Jacket. Justin Rose might have struggled yesterday and seen his lead slip away, but he’s far from out of this. He opts to go with the three-wood off the 1st tee once again and finds the fairway, a little fortuitously it must be said after flirting with the bunker.

MASTERS 2021: ANOTHER BIRDIE FOR RAHM
Jon Rahm has been brilliant so far today and picks up another birdie at the par-5 8th. He couldn’t reach the green in two after pulling his drive into the pine trees but a wonderful pitch brings about the same result. He’s four-under-par for the round and the tournament.

The worst start for Spieth. After finding the rough with his drive at the 1st, his approach rolls over the back of the green and he can’t get up and down. He drops a shot and falls back to -4, some seven shots behind the leader.

Shane Lowry is playing some great golf on the front nine. Three birdies have him two-under-par for the round and he looks well set to better his T25 finish last November.

Patrick Reed is too far back and has been left to rue some sloppy mistakes this week, having frequently worked himself into a position to contend. He’s started well again today, though, eagling the par-5 2nd after a magnificent 254-yard approach shot. He’s -3 and in a tie for 9th.

Jordan Spieth starts six shots back of Matsuyama. It’s not an impossible mountain to climb but would take some sensational form and fortune. He slings a drive slightly out right into the rough. Alongside him, Brian Harman, who is one of the shortest hitters on the PGA Tour, chucks one onto the fairway.

There are usually 10 Japanese reporters who trail Matsuyama throughout Masters week and he faces a slew of questions at every PGA Tour event.
