Chelsea fans react as club withdraws from Super League
Manchester City travel to Aston Villa in the Premier League tonight as Pep Guardiola’s players take to the pitch for the first time since the club withdrew from the proposed European Super League yesterday evening.
City were one of six top-flight teams in England to be announced on Sunday as participants in the breakaway competition, but all six clubs backed out of The Super League last night amid great pressure from fans, pundits, players, coaches, fellow Premier League sides and clubs all around the world. Now, City’s focus can return to playing football, with Guardiola and co no doubt keen to get back to winning ways after their FA Cup semi-final defeat by Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday.
That loss ended City’s chances of a quadruple, but the club are still very much on track to win the Premier League title with six games remaining in the campaign – and a Carabao Cup against Spurs coming this Sunday, as well as a Champions League semi-final versus Paris Saint-Germain looming. Dean Smith’s Aston Villa, meanwhile, have eight matches left to play and would move from 11th into the top half with a win here. Follow live updates from Man City vs Aston Villa in the Premier League below at the conclusion of Tottenham vs Southampton.
