Euro 2020 England vs Scotland: Fans sing national anthem
England and Scotland met in a hugely-anticipated Group D fixture at Euro 2020 tonight.
International football’s oldest rivals locked horns for the 115th time at Wembley, where the crackling atmosphere belied the restricted attendance under the arch. England knew victory against their fierce foes would seal progress to the round of 16 with a match to spare, but Scotland dug deep and gave Gareth Southgate’s side a few scares as they sealed a deserved 0-0 draw.
Having ended their 23-year absence from major tournaments with an underwhelming loss to the Czech Republic on Monday, Clarke’s men would have been in a perilous position had they lost to the Three Lions. But the wounded Scots rallied well in London, where Stephen O’Donnell saw an excellent volley met by an equally impressive save by Jordan Pickford in a first half that started with John Stones rattling the woodwork.
England failed to muster a shot on target during the opening period and did not improve much after the break, with Southgate eventually substituting captain Harry Kane against a Scotland side who pushed until the end. Lyndon Dykes saw the visitors’ best effort of an impressive second half effort cleared off the line by Reece James on a dank evening that saw the Tartan Army celebrate at full-time as their England counterparts booed.

Euro 2020: Scots feed off fervent atmosphere on night of blood and thunder at Wembley
After three seconds of this gritty goalless draw, an airborne Lyndon Dykes cracked his knee into Luke Shaw’s pelvis so hard the England left-back crumpled to the floor. Shaw had been picked for his “technical ability”, Gareth Southgate explained before kick-off, but as he writhed on the ground under biblical rain, he might have realised he was going to need to fight for the right to play with the ball:

Euro 2020: Reaction from Tyrone Mings
Tyrone Mings says he’s disappointed with the result and the way that England played tonight. He told BBC Sport after the game:
“Disappointing of course because we know we can play better. The important thing for us as defender and as a team going forward into the tournament, we kept another clean sheet which is a positive.
“The intensity from back to front [was missing]. I don’t think they wanted it more than us but we were not fluid and dynamic as wanted to be.
“It was a great occasion and we wanted to win the game, the atmosphere was incredible but we take a point and a step closer to qualification which is our goal.
“There were only 20,000 in and it is a shame we could not get a win for the fans.
“It leaves us with four points and we know we might have enough. We want to win the game on Tuesday against the Czech Republic.
“John McGinn is an annoying player to play against, a great player and we should have done more tonight.”

Euro 2020: Scotland revitalise Euro 2020 hopes with brave performances for the ages against England
In many ways it was typical Scotland. They came into this titanic Euro 2020 clash with England prepared to battle for a point - but, in the end, they came off the Wembley pitch wondering if they had missed an opportunity to claim all three:

Euro 2020: Reaction from Harry Kane
Harry Kane has had a tough couple games during Euro 2020 so far and questions are starting to arise over his fitness and form. At one time named ‘undroppable’ there are questions over whether he should even start in England’s next game.
Post match he spoke with ITV about tonight’s draw and being taken off by the second time in two games.
“It’s part of the game, the manager felt that was the right decision so you just have to take it. It is what it is.” said Kane before adding:
“Fair result, fair play to Scotland they defended well. It wasn’t our best performance, but it’s another point closer to qualification and that’s our ultimate goal. We just have to recover and look forward to next game in a few days.
“It was a tough game - Scotland defended really well, made good blocks at the right times when we know no game is going to be easy it’s a European Championship and Scotland are playing for their lives.
“We’ve got another big game in a few days against the Czechs, we want to finish sharp - it’s a point, not what we wanted but it’s one step closer to qualifying. One step at a time and we go again.”

Euro 2020: England 0 - 0 Scotland
That was the first goalless draw between England and Scotland at Wembley. That point means that Scotland can qualify if they defeat Croatia in the last game of the group stages. A win over Czech Republic will send England through as well.

Euro 2020: England 0 - 0 Scotland
The only positive Gareth Southgate will be able to take from that game is that England didn’t lose. They were outclassed in midfield and were way too slow on the ball.
The Declan Rice/Kalvin Phillips partnership that was so good against Croatia looked really negative tonight.

Full-time: England 0 - 0 Scotland
90+2 mins: Dire. England were very poor, Scotland were brilliant. The final whistle goes and the sides share the points at Wembley.
