The Eye-Popping Speeds Of Winter Olympics Sports

Follow all the action from the Winter Olympics, with eight gold medals up for grabs on day 12.

There was to be no such joy for Dave Ryding, though, who had been one of Britain’s main medal hopes. The slalom skier briefly occupied top spot but was eventually knocked off the podium entirely as France’s Clement Noel clinched gold. Elsewhere, Team GB’s hopes of reaching the women’s curling playoffs were dealt an almighty blow after a surprise 8-4 defeat against China in the round-robin. Bruce Mouat put in another assured performance for the men’s side, though, as they held off a fightback against the ROC to make it six wins out of seven.

Andrew Young and Jams Clugnet fell short in the semi-final of the men’s team sprint before Kathryn Thomson competes in the short track speed skating. Meanwhile, Team USA took home gold and silver in freestyle skiing but suffered a surprise upset in the ice hockey as they were knocked out by Slovakia. There was more gold for Norway too as Johannes Hosflot Klaebo secured his fifth Olympic gold medal.

    Men’s aerials freestyle skiing

Christopher Lillis suffers the same fate as his fellow American Justin Schoenefeld. He over-rotated on the landing and receives a lowly 103 from the judges. Pirmin Werner then goes into third with a score of 111.50.

That leaves just Maxim Burov, who top-scored in the previous round, with the chance to beat Qi Guangpu!

    Men’s aerials freestyle skiing

Those two first jumps showed the pressure of this final. Next, it’s double world champion China’s Qi Guangpu. His effort is much better though, soaring high into the air and sticking the landing. It’s a score of 129 and that will be difficult to beat.

    Men’s aerials freestyle skiing

All the pressure is on just one jump now in the men’s aerials final as the scores from the previous round are wiped.

It’s Justin Schoenefeld to go first but a poor landing leaves him with a score of 106.50, which won’t be enough.

Next, it’s the defending champion, Oleksandr Abramenko of Ukraine, who attempts the same jump. It’s better but his hand grazed the floor on his landing and he scores 116.50.

Ilia Burov, the brother of two-time world champion Maxim, has taken the lead in the aerials.

Ilia, the elder of the two brothers by seven years, leads on 129.50. Switzerland’s Pirmin Werner, who led after the first round, can’t top that and sits in second place three points back.

The top six jumpers after this round will advance to the main final.

    Short track speed skating

Kim A-lang, who is also from South Korea, won the second heat.

There’s still confusion over the extra lap that was raced in the first heat, though, with an official confirmation of the result still yet to be determined.

Team GB bosses taking long-term view

There was a lot of hype around Team GB potentially securing a record haul of medals at this Games. That certainly won’t be the case and now there is a degree of doubt as to whether they will pick up one at all.

Dame Katherine Jane Grainger, the chair of UK Sport, insists the funding that’s gone into winter sports is a long-term investment, though.

But there’s drama and a delay over the announcement of the official verdict of the quarter-final after it appears the skaters were mistakenly allowed to complete one extra lap. The referee is speaking to the teams’ coaches now.

Attentions now turn to the short track speed skating evening session.

There will be six heats to determine who advances to the semi-finals in the women’s 1500m.

There’s a big cheer as China take a brief lead but then South Korea’s defending Olympic champion Choi Min-jeong bursts clear to win by a wide margin.
