A seventies disco is popping up for one weekend only in a former Italian convent – and this is how you can get tickets.
Pop-up event organisers Detour Discotheque have announced that it is bringing a 1970s-inspired party to Matera in southern Italy.
The city is known for its extensive cave dwellings and rock-hewn churches. It has been a Unesco World Heritage site since 1993.
The disco will take place at the Fondazione Le Monacelle convent complex, hidden within the Sassi cave labyrinth.
The former convent is now a not-for-profit cultural foundation and dates back to the 16th century, but for this event will be transformed by retro dancefloors and spinning mirror balls.
By day, Detour Discotheque will run cooking classes, talks on disco culture and guided explorations of Matera’s historical Sassi complex (although time by the pool is built in, too.)
By night, guests will dress up for dancing, while Italian snacks and pizza will be provided by food partner Crosta Mollica. Time will also be spent at Area 8, a bar and creative space within the complex.
Taking place from Friday 11 September to Sunday 13 September, the event will be limited to just 300 people. Tickets are now on sale from £195 per person for the weekend.
Detour Discotheque, now in its fifth year, is known for pairing beautiful locations with intimate dance floor experiences.
Past events have taken place in an Icelandic fjord, on a remote Scottish island, atop a Swiss mountain and on an Italian farm.
Founder Jonny Ensall said: “After the experience in Puglia in 2025, returning to southern Italy made complete sense – Matera is astonishingly beautiful, but also a creatively progressive place”.
“We’ve been welcomed by so many people, including the mayor Antonio Nicoletti. Its history, setting and cultural ambition make it the perfect backdrop.”
