Richard Stafford, the lawyer representing the Petito family, claimed Brian Laundrie stole Gabby Petito’s credit card and used it after leaving her in Wyoming. Mr Stafford made the claim during an interview on Dr Phil McGraw’s show that featured Ms Petito’s family.

Mr Laundrie’s sister, Cassie Laundrie has urged her brother to come forward to “get us out of this horrible mess.”

Speaking on ABC News in an exclusive interview airing Tuesday on “Good Morning America,” she said: “I would tell my brother to just come forward and get us out of this horrible mess.”

Hiker Dennis Davis, an engineer from Florida, said he believed he had spoken with Brian Laundrie on a road near the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina – close to the border with Tennessee. Audio of his 911 call was made public. He said the alleged Mr Laundrie was “talking wild” about having to get to California to see a girlfriend.

“There is no doubt in my mind I spoke to Brian Laundrie — none whatsoever,” he told the New York Post.

More serious criminal charges against Ms Petito’s missing boyfriend Mr Laundrie are “extremely likely” if he’s found alive, the state attorney for Palm Beach County in Florida has claimed.

David Aronberg defended his office for not filing charges against Mr Laundrie, saying “prosecutors have a higher burden to prove cases beyond any reasonable doubt”.

Asked by News Nation Now why Mr Laundrie hadn’t been charged with a more serious crime at this point in the death of his 22-year-old travel blogger girlfriend, which has been ruled a homicide, Mr Aronberg added: “I think that’s coming.”

Forensic pathologist questions FBI’s motive behind withholding Gabby's remains

A renowned forensic pathologist has called the FBI’s decision to withhold Gabby Petito’s remains from her family “unusual.”

Dr Michael Baden also said that it was “very unusual” that the agency has not released the 22-year-old YouTuber’s cause of death even now.

He told Fox News: “I think the FBI would be very cautious about things because they don’t want to make a mistake. Whatever reasons they’re withholding, it is very unusual.”

Dr Baden added: “I think that the only reason would be, you’re concerned that you’re missing something, but that should not be a concern, because whatever is needed to investigate the death from the point of view of the medical examiner will be seen, documented and could be retained.”

Discussing Mr Laundrie’s actions since Ms Petito’s disappearance, Mr Stafford said: “I’m sure the FBI has a lot more evidence than we have. You could look at his state of mind by his actions.

“He ran. He stole her credit card. He used her credit card to get home and then ran from the police. That’s going to show what he was thinking.”
