Commonwealth Games: Matt Walls involved in major crash at track cycling

Jake Jarman made it a fabulous four gold medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games after a sensational display on the vault, while teammates Joe Fraser grabbed a third gold on the parallel bars as England continued to dominate the gymnastics. Alice Kinsella took gold in women’s floor with Ondine Achampong continuing her sensational Games with a silver medal.

One of the stars of England’s athletics team, Keely Hodgkinson, was safely through in the 800m heats, as was Scotland’s Laura Muir, although there was pain for compatriot Jemma Reekie, who was clipped on the final bend of her heat to finish third and suffer an early exit. Meanwhile, England’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson is on top with a slender 17-point lead following two events in the Commonwealth Games heptathlon.

Johnson-Thompson will resume her bid tonight with the shot put and 200m, and six athletics gold medals are also up for grabs. That includes Hannah Cockroft in the T33/34 100m, but Olympic bronze medallist Holly Bradshaw has been forced to pull out of the pole vault. Meanwhile, Adam Peaty delivered a redemptive gold in the 50m breaststroke final, following his shock defeat in the 100m on Sunday. Follow all the latest from Birmingham, below:

The 32-year-old was edged out by ippon, meaning she was unable to replicate the European gold medal she won earlier this year in Bulgaria.

However Howell, who has endured 10 operations due to her sport and almost retired after missing out on a place at the Rio Olympics in 2016, said she was proud of her achievement in reaching the podium.

Natalie Metcalf focused on New Zealand after England’s netballers see off Uganda

England netball captain Natalie Metcalf is raring to go against New Zealand after her side maintained their unbeaten start to the Commonwealth Games with a 56-35 win against Uganda.

The reigning Commonwealth champions now have four wins from four games and will take on the Kiwis in their final Pool B match after a tricky challenge against Uganda on Tuesday.

Although the score stood at 25-15 in England’s favour at half-time, the Roses benefitted from some fresh faces after the break and an impressive third-quarter performance saw them extend their lead to 40-24.

They then went on to wrap up the game comfortably, and Metcalf admitted rotation made a big impact.

More from Adam Peaty, who told the BBC: “That was the only one I haven’t won in my career, the Commonwealth 50m and I can retire now. I don’t care about the stats, tonight was about racing, who was going to get on the wall first.

“No one can really get up to the rate I get to but without the training it goes nowhere. I am looking forward to resetting and having a winter because I haven’t done that since 2019.

“I am so glad I got that loss earlier in the week because these wins feel so much more alive and so much better.”
