The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) is underway in Orlando, Florida, opening with a 2020 election conspiracy supercut, a video heralding cancel culture “victim” Gina Carano and a gold statue of ousted president Donald Trump raising eyebrows in the Hyatt Regency lobby ahead of his headline speech on Sunday.
Mr Trump is widely expected to announce a 2024 presidential run during his address to the four-day gathering - described as “Woodstock for election liars” by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper - a prospect dismissed by his White House successor Joe Biden, who has said he will not be paying attention.
Friday’s session has already been hit by controversy after members of the crowd booed when asked to wear their Covid face masks by organisers. Florida’s govenor Ron DeSantis kicked off proceedings by declaring his state was “open for business”, Texas senator Ted Cruz mocked Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Josh Hawley and Donald Trump Jr are due to take to the stage later.

Florida congressman Matt Gaetz used his remarks at CPAC to fire at multiple targets from Liz Cheney to Andrew Cuomo imploring the crowd to join his America First movement.
“Every day I’m a Florida man and it’s good to be home!” he declared after saying he was a marked man in Congress and banned from New Jersey.

Blackburn rallies troops for fight against Big Tech
Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee is rallying the CPAC crowd to fight back against Big Media and Big Tech saying that Section 230 should be taken away and reserved for “little tech”.
She also complained that Trump was fact-checked.
“First, they decided they were going to fact-check him, the leader of the free world! Then they were going to block him — send a message... then they were going to permanently ban him... The leader of the free world.”

Big applause line from Jason Chaffetz
Former congressman and Fox News contributor Jason Chaffetz got a big round of applause for the line: “I’m from Utah, and I’m not Mitt Romney.”
Senator Mitt Romney, who once won four CPAC presidential straw polls, was one of the moderate Republicans who were disinvited from this year’s conference after voting in favour of the impeachment of Donald Trump.
Not a popular move with this crowd.
Mr Chaffetz continued: “But, if you’re looking for Mitt, just go down the hall and turn left. And then just keep going left. More and more left, and you’ll find him.”
