People living in the UK can get extra £737 per month as a part of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) PIP scheme.

More than one million individuals are receiving weekly payments ranging from £28.70 to £184.30 through Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Adult Disability Payment (ADP) to support musculoskeletal conditions.

PIP payments are issued by the DWP every four weeks to those with long-term physical or mental conditions who need help with extra living costs.

Recent data from the DWP reveals that over 1.1 million adults across Great Britain receive PIP for more than 85 musculoskeletal conditions. These conditions affect the body’s movement and musculoskeletal system, including muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Examples include osteoarthritis, back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and lupus.

For those aged over 16 and below State Pension age, PIP in England and Wales—or Adult Disability Payment (ADP) in Scotland—can provide financial support for musculoskeletal conditions. Additionally, individuals whose ability to work is impacted may qualify for ‘new style’ Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).

Overall, 3.6 million people in Great Britain are PIP claimants, with nearly 126,300 in Scotland. However, as current PIP recipients in Scotland transition to ADP, the number of PIP claimants will decline.

While new claims for PIP have been replaced by ADP in Scotland, the eligibility criteria remain largely similar, with Social Security Scotland adopting a more “people-centric” approach.

Successful claims for PIP or ADP offer financial assistance ranging from £28.70 to £184.30 per week, equivalent to £114.80 to £737.20 every four weeks.

The average processing time for new PIP claims is 15 weeks, meaning applications submitted now could be processed—with back payments issued—by February 2025.
