    Euro 2020: Daily briefing

The Netherlands take on Ukraine at the Johan Cruijff Arena Arena in Amsterdam as Group C begins at Euro 2020.

The Oranje will hope that Memphis Depay can fire them towards the latter stages of the tournament, with the Lyon striker linked with a move to Barcelona this summer.

The former Manchester United star is one of the favourites to win the Golden Boot, with Romelu Lukaku’s double against Russia placing him at the front of the queue already.

Frank De Boer is under pressure heading into the tournament, knowing that his diversion away from the classic Dutch 4-3-3 is not popular, but the former Ajax and Barcelona defender maintains he is committed to his system.

“Of course that is not something you often experience, but it is not something that we should make very big,” De Boer said at a press conference when asked about his views on the direct message when a plane was flown over the Dutch training camp in Zeist with a banner which read: “Frank. Play 4-3-3”.

“This is just someone who has an opinion and has shown it that way. We always try to play dominant football and that’s what we want with this system.

“I think 5-3-2 sounds negative, with 3-5-2 you already have fewer defenders. We want to get our hands on the game, which means your wingbacks are always quite high. I think with this set-up we have the best people in the right places. Players who have played great all year.”

90 + 3: This absorbing game now nearing the end. You wouldn’t be surprised if someone was to get another goal. Memphis Depay has been taken off, who shined without contributing anything major to the game.

Ukraine will be heartbroken if this ends in defeat.

GOAL! The Netherlands 3-2 Ukraine (Dumfries ‘86) ⚽

What a game!! Netherlands are now back in the lead! Nathan Ake’s cross is met by the head of right-back Dumfries, who towers above Zinchenko to head the ball past Buschan, who perhaps could’ve done better in getting a stronger hand to the ball.

This has been a thriller of a game. Brilliant.

    GOAL! The Netherlands 2-2 Ukraine ( Yaremchuk ‘79) ⚽

Goal! And Ukraine have equalised!! After seemingly looking dead and buried, Shevchenko’s side are now level!

A magnificent dead ball from Malinovskyi on the left hand side is met by the head of Yaremchuk, who plants his header from six yards out into the corner of the net.

What a goal. What a game!

GOAL! The Netherlands 2-1 Ukraine (Yarmolenko ‘75) ⚽

Goal! What a stunning goal it was from West Ham’s Yarmolenko, who cut inside down the right hand and bent the ball beautifully into the top corner of Stekelenburg’s goal with his left foot.

That’s the goal of the competition thus far. Simply a magnificent goal.

Euro 2020: The Netherlands 2-0 Ukraine

72’: Netherlands looking very confident on the ball now, controlling the game. Depay and Dumfries have been lovely to watch this evening. Ukraine really haven’t turned up in this second half.

Euro 2020: The Netherlands 2-0 Ukraine

64’: Ukraine coach Andriy Shevchenko has substituted the substitute, with Marlos making way for Shaparenko.

Frank de Boer, meanwhile, has made two changes of his own. Nathan Ake has replaced Daley Blind, and Patrick van Aanholt has come off for Owen Wijndal.

Ukraine need to find a way back into this game.

GOAL! The Netherlands 2-0 Ukraine (Weghorst 58’) ⚽

Goal! And Netherlands add a second, six minutes after their first. Again Dumfries was involved, as he marched down the right-hand side and into the Ukraine box. He seemed to have bundled over a Ukrainian player, but the referee allowed the game to play on, the ball fell to Weghorst, who struck the ball goal wards. It took a deflection off Dumfries and into the net.

The decision went to VAR, who ruled in favour of the goal.

The game could be as good as over. Ukraine look vulnerable.

GOAL! Euro 2020: The Netherlands 1-0 Ukraine (Wijnaldum ‘51) ⚽

Goal! And The Netherlands take the lead! Dumfries, who has been excellent down the right hand side for the Dutch, crosses the ball into the box, Buschan runs out to meet it, but can only dive and parry it outwards, but it’s met by the onrushing Wijnaldum, who, rather than smash it, brilliantly curls it into the net with his instep.

A great goal for Netherlands, and deserved based on the balance of play.

Euro 2020: The Netherlands 0-0 Ukraine

46’: The second half kicks off.

Can it be as thrilling as the first? We all hope so. No changes have been made by either side.

Euro 2020: The Netherlands 0-0 Ukraine (half time)

Half time at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Can we please have every game at Euro 2020 played with the same openness as that first half? What a great 45 minutes, despite no goals. Both Ukraine and Netherlands ping-ponged the ball from one side of the pitch to the other, with barely any slowing down period.

Netherlands had the best of the chances, with Dumfries coming close twice. Depay has been a delight to watch drifting in between the Ukrainian lines, and dribbling past players seemingly at will.

Ukraine have showed that they can be dangerous also, with Malinovskyi and Yarmolenko getting into good areas in the Dutch box.

This game has everything, bar a goal. But let’s hope they will flow in the second half.
