Josh Kerr claims silver in 1500m race beating Ingebrigtsen in a shocking finish

It’s a packed Olympics schedule on Day 13 of the Paris 2024 Games with Team GB keen to add to its medal collection.

American sprint sensation Noah Lyles once again headlines the athletics today, hunting double sprint gold in the men’s 200m final following Matt Hudson-Smith’s heartbreaking 400m final silver last night. Great Britain’s heptathlon star Katarina Johnson-Thompson is also in action and started strongly with season’s bests in the 100m hurdles and high jump this morning to lead the standings.

Jack Laugher is back in the men’s diving 3m springboard final, looking to win another medal after securing the bronze in the 3m synchro with Anthony Harding but taekwondo star Jade Jones suffered a shock first-round defeat to end her bid for a historic third gold medal, having entered the Games amid a drugs test controversy earlier this year.

Plus look out for LeBron James and Team USA in the men’s basketball semi-finals later this evening, when UK-based boxer Cindy Ngamba – who has secured the Refugee Team’s first-ever Olympic medal – will also be in semi-final action, aiming to keep her gold hopes alive.

Olympics 2024: British sailing pair on ‘devastating’ medal race error

Team GB’s John Gimson and Anna Burnet were denied a chance to compete for a mixed multihull medal earlier after crossing the start line too soon, a cruel ending with the British boat well placed to press for at least bronze.

“It’s brutal. This is the most brutal way to lose because it is so far out of our control,” Gimson said. “I’m so proud of this week and how we sailed. We made one mistake and it’s cost us an Olympic medal so you can imagine we’re pretty broken.”

Burnet added: “In that moment it’s devastating, it’s a bad dream but we can be proud of what we have done.

“There’s no one I’d rather be here with. We’re so lucky we get to do this together. The highs and low, we’re biding it together.”

    Olympics 2024: Golf - women’s second round

A sparkling round from Morgane Metraux at Le Golf National, flying up the leaderboard and eventually signing for a 66. A dropped shot at the last takes the sheen off slightly, but she’s -8 overall and two shots clear of the field.

Closingly, quickly, though is Lydia Ko, a medallist at both Games since golf’s return to the Olympics. The New Zealander is on the back nine and also six-under for the day. Celine Boutier has just dropped back a little after making excellent use of home conditions yesterday, though the Frenchwoman remains in touch at -5.

Impressive start for Katarina Johnson-Thompson as she leads heptathlon

Katarina Johnson-Thompson got off to an excellent start in the women’s heptathlon at Paris 2024 as she sat in first place after the 100m hurdles and the high jump.

The reigning world champion, who has come to Paris nursing an ongoing tendonitis issue, set a season’s best of 13.40 seconds in the hurdles and then moved up from eighth place overall with a jump of 1.92 metres, also her best this year.

The high jump came down to a tense battle between Johnson-Thompson and the defending Olympic champion Nafissatou Thiam, who was perfect until the bar was raised to 1.95 metres but then failed on all three attempts.

Olympics 2024: Jade Jones left hoping for a repechage place after falling at first hurdle

Jade Jones’ dream of emulating her 2012 and 2016 Olympic triumphs came to an end as she fell at the first hurdle of the women’s -57kg taekwondo competition at the Grand Palais in Paris.

The 31-year-old was edged out by North Macedonian Miljana Reljikj in her round of 16 content meaning her hopes now rest on a potential place in the repechage which could secure her a bronze medal at best.

In order for Jones to be given that opportunity, Reljikj must reach the final later on Thursday.

Jones came to Paris under a cloud having escaped a ban for failing to submit to a drug test in December last year, with the UK Anti-Doping Agency ruling that she bore “no fault or negligence for the missed test” due to “loss of cognitive capacity”.

Matthew Hudson-Smith eyes revenge in LA after Paris silver medal

Matthew Hudson-Smith is relishing the opportunity to gain revenge over Quincy Hall after coming off second-best to the American in a thrilling Olympic men’s 400m final.

Hudson-Smith was on course to become Great Britain’s third male winner of this event and first since Eric Liddell 100 years ago as he led with 50m to go in the Stade de France on Wednesday night.

But Hall’s lung-bursting finish saw him triumph by the razor-thin margin of four hundredths of a second and Hudson-Smith already has his sights set on payback after being bumped into silver once more.

    Olympics 2024: Climbing - men’s speed result

The margins are fine in speed climbing, the best male clamberers scaling the wall inside five seconds and everything often coming down to who gets the touch. It’s for that reason that Sam Watson of the United States is furious even after setting a world record - his rapid ascent is enough to earn him bronze against Rez Alipour, but Watson desperately wanted gold, and his 4.74secs would have been enough.

The American’s semi-final defeat to Wu Peng came by eight one-hundredths of a second, and the final is closer still: Indonesia’s Veddriq Leonardo beats his Chinese rival by two one-hundredths. A brilliant moment for the 27-year-old, who is from the port of Pontianak in the very west of Borneo. A first gold of the Games for Indonesia - and a first ever for the nation not won on the badminton court.

    GOLD: Veddriq Leonardo (Indonesia)

    Silver: Wu Peng (China)

    Bronze: Sam Watson (USA)

Olympics 2024: Sailing - Team GB miss out on mixed multi-hull medal

There is no reprieve for the British boat - John Gimson and Anna Burnett’s error has cost them their shot at a medal, New Zealand’s Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson clinging on to bronze despite finishing eighth in the medal race.

It’s gutting for Team GB’s pairing, denied even a chance to compete after getting their position wrong on the startline. The pair are engaged to be wed later this summer - plenty to discuss on the flight back from Marseille, I’d imagine. Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti have been invited to that wedding, and will arrive as double Olympic champions having retained their Tokyo title.

    GOLD: Italy (Ruggero Tita/Caterina Banti)

    Silver: Argentina (Mateo Majdalani/Eugenia Bosco)

Bronze: New Zealand (Micah Wilkinson/Erica Dawson)

    Olympics 2024: Athletics - women’s heptathlon

And Nafi Thiam can’t clear 1.95m. Katarina Johnson-Thompson also goes XXX, taking a matching 1132 point and top spot after two events.

Thiam should leapfrog to the top of the standings after the shot put this evening, but it’s been a good morning session for Johnson-Thompson.

Olympics 2024: Athletics - Katarina Johnson-Thompson continues strong start

A delighted Katarina Johnson-Thompson clears 1.92m at the third attempt, flopping over with a beaming smile as she joins the great Nafi Thiam as the only two heptathletes in the field left standing. Anna Hall, who took World Championship silver behind KJT in Budapest last year, can’t join them.

Thiam has looked supreme, as she often does in the high jump - but a first failure at 1.95m will please Johnson-Thompson, who will be very pleased if she can match her rival.

    Olympics 2024: Mixed multi-hull sailing

There’s more bad news for Britain.

Great Britain’s pair John Gimson and Anna Burnet in the opening moments of the race, at the start line, were over the start, they had the chance to go over and correct it, they didn’t think they were over.

The race ruled that they were over and they had to pull out.

If this race does not get completed due to the wind, and 11 others have already been abandoned, then Great Britain will be on the start line, but that is the only way back for the British pair.
