Arsenal’s frustrating season ends in disappointment to raise awkward questions for Mikel Arteta
This dispiriting season for Arsenal essentially ends as it should: all of the campaign’s issues inevitably combining for one last disappointment. There was no final step to Munich and that will fairly be cast as a backward step overall.
Paris Saint-Germain have instead made a huge stride in becoming the club that Qatar so desperately want them to be. They beat their own ghosts here as much as they beat Arsenal 2-1 on the night and 3-1 on aggregate.
Miguel Delaney reports from the Parc des Princes:

Joao Neves contradicts Arteta's 'best team claim'
"We are very happy to be here in the Champions League final,” Neves said. “Very important for us to find the victory and we have the chance to go for a Champions League title.
"Arsenal are a very strong team, lots of individual quality and as a team. But I think we were the better team.
"We will continue like that, work hard and stick to our game plan. I think that's the best way for us to play, it's our football and that's how we found the win. We are confident."
That’s not what Mikel Arteta thought...

Rice speaks on Arsenal's injury struggles
"It's tough,” he told TNT Sports. “We've done the whole season without five or six of our best players so to do what we've done is unbelievable.
“We've given it everything, the whole squad, everyone flying with us and everyone believed. You could see that we believed it. On another night we maybe score two or three, that first 20 minutes where they score and we don't take our chances is a kick in the teeth.
“We'll be back, three games left, it's been a long season but we keep pushing because we want to win and do the best we can."

Odegaard gives post-match thoughts
"We gave it a proper go,” the Arsenal skipper told TNT Sports. We started the game really well. We were on the front foot, had the momentum, a few big chances but in the end it wasn't enough.
“Between the boxes we did well inside the two over the two games we weren't good enough. Credit to their goalkeeper who made amazing saves. It wasn't enough and that's painful.
"In the boxes, especially today what we did with the ball between the boxes we dominated the ball and took the control of the game from the start. We were not strong enough in the boxes and that's where we lost it.
"It's painful, we wanted to do the big thing, a big goal in the league and the Champions League. Massive disappointment but we have to stay strong and together. Take the lessons, take the pain and use it to come back stronger.
"We have to learn from this. We did a lot of good things but it's not enough. In front of goal is where games are decided and that's where we have to be sharper. We have to use this pain in a good way."

Rice says Arsenal are 'desperate' for silverware
"We're all desperate for it,” Rice told TNT Sports. “That's why we play football, we want to win trophies, we want to be at the pinnacle, winning stuff.
“For whatever reason it hasn't been meant to be. We've been really close and it's not good enough. Arsenal deserve to be pushing for trophies and winning things but there's not a lot more we can be doing.
“A lot of superstars have suffered defeats to come out on top. It hurts, you see the boys, the manager. We wanted to be in Munich but this doesn't define us and we'll be back."

Donnarumma disproving any claims of 'overrated'
Gianluigi Donnarumma has long been touted as the goalkeeper that will lead his generation. Becoming captain of AC Milan as a teenager will do that to you.
However, the last few years haven’t been perfect for the big Italian. He’s been called into question quite a bit, having made a few notable howlers - case in point against Arsenal in the league phase.
However, he has been absolutely stellar in this European campaign. After coming up trumps in the shootout at Anfield, he has put in two tie-winning performances against Aston Villa and now Arsenal.
A goliath between the sticks.

Another VAR calamity
Regardless of the result, who else is relieved that this tie just about avoided being marred by VAR?
The awarding of PSG’s second-half penalty was nothing short of farcical. Achraf Hakimi’s shot may have brushed Myles Lewis-Skelly’s hand, but there was ZERO appeal from anyone inside the ground and it had no effect on the trajectory of the shot.
All of a sudden, the ref is off to the monitor and a penalty is given.
Vitinha steps up and thankfully, David Raya saves it, meaning the call had no direct impact on the result.
Should it have gone in, the incident would’ve been a major talking point. And we’re all bored of VAR controversy at this point.

Donnarumma proved the difference, says Arteta
"When you look at the two games their best player on the pitch has been the goalkeeper, he has been the difference for them in the tie,” Arteta told TNT Sports.
“We were very close, much closer than the result showed but unfortunately we are out. I am very proud of the players.
"After 20 minutes it should have been 3-0. There is something extra you need to go your way in the competition and it didn't. We were very close and for long periods of both games we were much better than them but we are not there and that has to hurt.
"If we want to win this competition we have to realise that. There are certain things that are on us. You shouldn't just be understanding we are out. That is not the way I look at it.”
