Santander will close a further nine branches as early as next week as more customers make fewer in-person visits. The shuttered branches will join the banking giant’s larger list of at least 95 locations to close in 2025.

This move forms part of a broader trend, with thousands of bank branches closing over the last decade. According to consumer group Which?, more than 6,300 bank and building society branches have closed since January 2015. A statement on Santander’s website reads: “We last did a major review of our branches in 2021. Since then, many of our customers are choosing to use Mobile, Online and Telephone Banking more, and branches less.” In line with this, the bank said changes are to be made to some branches, including reduced opening hours, converting some to ‘counter-free’ and closing others.
