Gary Lineker made his final appearance on Match of the Day this Sunday (25 May), ending over two decades as host.
The show opened with a heartfelt slideshow of his best moments, before the 64-year-old said: “It wasn’t meant to end this way.”
His departure follows controversy over a social media post referencing Zionism alongside a rat image, which drew heavy criticism.
Lineker later issued an unreserved apology, calling it a genuine mistake.
As a result, the former Barcelona, Tottenham and Everton striker will no longer present for the BBC, including future coverage of the 2026 World Cup and FA Cup.
