Two changes for Liverpool from the midweek win over Galatasaray, and both enforced. Giorgi Mamardashvili starts in goal with Alisson not in the squad, and Cody Gakpo replaces Mohamed Salah. Arne Slot could keep the 4-4-2 system which worked well in midweek, with Gakpo partnering Hugo Ekitike. Jeremie Frimpong remains at right back so Dominic Szoboszlai continues in midfield.

Brighton are unchanged from last weekend’s win at Sunderland, so James Milner starts against former club Liverpool amid a record-breaking season where he claimed the Premier League appearance record at the age of 40. Winger Kaoru Mitoma is available and returns to the bench.

The return of Jeremie Frimpong at right back allowed Dominik Szoboszlai to star in midfield in Liverpool’s big win over Galatasaray, and former captain Steven Gerrard has urged Arne Slot to play the Hungarian in his “proper position” over the final weeks of the season.

“People are going away now talking about his performance because he's exciting and he's entertaining,” Gerrard said. “But he's in his proper position. Keep him in his proper position. Let him flourish."

Liverpool are “frustrated” by their own inconsistency this season, captain Virgil van Dijk has revealed.

The Reds have dropped points against Wolves and Tottenham in their last two Premier League games but showed what they are capable of with an impressive 4-0 win over Galatasaray in midweek.

“I think occasionally we have been showing and playing good games but not consistently and on a regular basis and it’s been frustrating for all of us and for the fans as well.”

Liverpool have already beaten Brighton twice this season, winning 3-0 against them in the Premier League and 2-0 in the FA Cup, with both games coming at Anfield.

Brighton, however, have won two of their last three home games against Liverpool - including the 3-2 win last season after the Reds had been crowned Premier League champions.

Arne Slot confirmed on Friday that Salah will not be joining with Egypt during the international break, with the former now facing a race against time to feature in the FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City on Saturday 4 April.

“Good thing for Liverpool is we go to international break, bad news for Egypt, he can't go there. We hope that what Mo has shown in the past, he can recover faster than other players. He takes such good care of his body that he can be back earlier than others, as history has shown. Only two weeks until we go again.”

After his goal, assist, and excellent performance in the 4-0 win over Galatasaray on Wednesday, Liverpool will be without Mohamed Salah for the trip to Brighton. Salah may not have enjoyed his finest season, but it remains a blow.

And it comes just as Arne Slot had found a formation and system that worked in the win over Galatasaray, with Salah and Hugo Ekitike working well as split strikers. Could Cody Gakpo come into the side as Salah’s replacement?

There was better news on the injury front as Arne Slot confirmed that Liverpool are hopeful Alexander Isak will be back from injury for the Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain. The £125m signing has been ruled out since breaking his leg in the win at Tottenham in December but could be back in action after the international break.

Fourth place is up for grabs this afternoon and Liverpool could go above Aston Villa ahead of their clash with West Ham tomorrow, as long as they beat Brighton. A win for Arne Slot’s side would move Liverpool to within two points of Manchester United.
