A Hanoi-bound Vietnam Airlines flight was forced to return to the Munich airport on Saturday after experiencing technical difficulties shortly after departure, according to authorities.

Data from the flight-tracking service Flightradar24 indicated that the Boeing 787 reportedly overran the runway during take-off, prompting the plane to circle for more than two hours to burn fuel before landing.

Footage broadcast by US network ABC News captured the jet taking off with a large dust cloud trailing behind it.

In a statement, Vietnam Airlines confirmed that the flight returned to its departure airport due to a "technical issue", though no further details were offered. The Munich airport reported that following the landing, the aircraft was unable to taxi off the north runway under its own power and remained stranded.

This resulted in the closure of the north runway, requiring air traffic to be rerouted via the south runway, according to the airport.

Vietnam Airlines said the flight crew adhered to all necessary protocols to land safely back in Munich.

"The passengers and cabin crew members are safe," the airline said.

The carrier said it was working with relevant authorities and parties to inspect the plane, adding that further updates would follow once the findings and operational arrangements were confirmed.
