Google has announced its top 10 trending destinations for 2020.

The search engine giant compiled the list by looking at Google Hotel searches between January and December 2019 for dates in 2020.

It compared that data to searches during the same time period in 2018, and ranked destinations according to their search volume increase from 2019 to 2020.

The top destination with the highest rise in search is Da Nang, a coastal city in Vietnam.

Next in line is Sao Paulo, Brazil’s financial centre, which gets new direct flights from the UK in March, courtesy of Virgin Atlantic.

In third place is Seoul in South Korea; followed by Tokyo, Japan; and Tel Aviv, Israel.

Google has also launched a tool for those with flexible travel dates, enabling them to identify the cheapest times to book hotels in a certain area.

On the “When to visit” tab, users can see how weather, crowds and pricing vary across the year for their chosen destination.

A “What you’ll pay” tab also reveals if hotel prices are low, typical or high for the dates someone is considering.

It follows Google Maps sending out its personal 2019 Timelines.

These round-ups show individual users how many countries, cities and places they visited last year; how far they’ve travelled on foot, by bike, public transport and car; how many times they travelled around the world (if all their travel miles were added together); and their particular travel highlights.

On The Independent travel team, editor Cathy Adams’ timeline revealed she visited 56 cities across 16 countries, with her total mileage the equivalent of travelling 3.2 times around the world.

Deputy editor Helen Coffey travelled to 36 cities in 14 countries, taking her 1.6 times around the globe.
