Eligible people will get a cold Weather Payment if the average temperature in their area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below for seven days in a row - this it what's known as a trigger.

They will then get £25 for each seven day period of the very cold weather.

The scheme runs between November 1 and March 31, meaning it's only possible for triggers to occur during this period.

It should be paid to those who are eligible and living in the triggered postcode automatically within 14 working days.

The money should be paid into the same bank or building society account as benefit payments.

These payments will not affect the person's other benefits.

It may be a person can get Cold Weather Payments if they're getting:

    • Pension Credit
    • Income Support
    • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
    • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
    • Universal Credit
    • Support for Mortgage Interest.

That said, not everyone - for example some Universal Credit claimants - will qualify, so it's worth checking the government website for more details on eligibility.
