    Bethany Shriever wins Gold in women’s Bmx on Olympic debut

    Day eight of Tokyo 2020 is well underway and all eyes are currently on the athletics track.

    Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah wins 100m final as Jamaica takes home bronze, silver and gold. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce finished in second place while and Shericka Jackson took home bronze.

    Ms Thompson-Herah set an Olympic record, running the race a time of 10.61sec.

    Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith was knocked out of the women’s 100m at the semi-final stage. However, there was joy for Asher-Smith’s teammate, Daryll Neita, who finished third in a separate semi-final and qualified as one of the fastest losers with a time of 11.00 seconds.

    The two UK sprinters were bidding to become the first British female to win an individual sprint medal at the Olympics since 1960.

    Earlier, Caeleb Dressel and Katie Ledecky added to the tally of United States’ gold medals, while Australia’s winning streak continued with Kaylee McKeown winning the 200m backstroke for their seventh gold in the pool. Britain claimed swimming gold in the new 4x100m mixed medley relay with a world record of 3 minutes, 37.58 seconds.

    Simone Biles pulled out of gymnastics finals for the vault and the uneven bars. It was announced that the Team USA superstar, who has not performed since pulling out of the team all-around event to deal with her mental health, withdrew from the events “after further consultation with medical staff.”

    Team GB took bronze in women’s windsurfing as Emma Wilson came in third after China’s Lu Yunxiu, who took the gold.

    Viral video shows Suni Lee’s family exploding with joy as she wins gold

    A video has gone viral of the moment Suni Lee’s family realised she’d won Olympic gold at the women’s gymnastic all-around event in Tokyo.

    The footage captures hundreds of her friends and family on Thursday as they gathered to watch in Oakdale, Minnesota – painfully early at 5.30am – during a live stream of Ms Lee’s individual all-around competition.

    The Minnesota community nervously watched the broadcast and erupted in celebration as 18-year-old Ms Lee became the first-ever Hmong American Olympian to win a gold medal.

    The Olympics’ newest star: a cockroach

    During a women’s field hockey match, an apparently distracted cameraman turned his attention to a large cockroach crawling along a beam. For a few bizarre seconds, the insect was broadcast all over the world.

    Footage of the moment quickly went viral.

    “That roach did not need that much screen time,” one Twitter user commented.

    If you noticed the pink masks worn by some members of the US fencing team, there’s a reason for those. Three of the American fencers wore the masks to protest the participation of a teammate, Alen Hadzic, who is accused of sexual assault in the Olympics.

    Mr Hadzic is an alternate on the men’s épée team in Tokyo despite at least three complaints having been made by women against him. He has denied the accusations, calling them “untruths.”

    The South Korean team were the reigning champions, but ultimately failed to best the US team, which does not include any current MLB players.

    World’s top rank tennis player beaten during Olympics

    Serbian Novak Djokovic, the world’s top ranked tennis player, failed to medal after losing to Spain’s Pablo Carreño Busta.

    Mr Djokovic previously lost to Germany’s Alexander Zverev. “I gave it all, whatever I had left in the tank, which was not so much,” Mr Djokovic said, according to NPR.

    Olympic standings: China, US tied, Russian athletes in third

    The US and China are tied for most medals, with both nations securing a total of 46 medals. China is leading the US in the number of gold medals, holding 21 against the US’s 16.

    The next closest team after the US and China is the Russian Olympic Committee, the name under which Russian athletes are competing, which has won 37 medals total, 11 of which are gold.

    Japan and Great Britain-Northern Ireland round out the top five spots. Japan has 17 gold medals, with 30 medals overall, while GBNI has 28 medals overall with eight gold medals.

    Detroit Lions QB explodes with joy watching his wife qualify for Olympic hurdle semi-finals

    Melissa Gonzalez, a hurdle runner competing for Colombia, finished second in the 400m hurdles, qualifying her to compete in the semi-finals.

    On the other side of the planet, Ms Gonzalez’s husband, Lion’s quarterback Daniel Blough, watched his wife compete, exploding with excitement when she successfully qualified.

    The joyful moment was captured on video and circulated on social media.
