Watch: British BMX medallists reflect on success at Tokyo Olympics

Charlotte Worthington won gold for Team GB the first Olympic women’s BMX freestyle competition in Tokyo before teammate Declan Brooks followed up with bronze in the men’s event moments later.

The double success meant Team GB have taken a medal in all four BMX events at the Tokyo Olympics after the racing gold and silver for Beth Shriever and Kye Whyte.

Worthington said winning a gold medal at the Olympics proves that BMX athletes – and those that compete in extreme sports – are just as much worthy to be there as the likes of Usain Bolt.

Sport must confront gender debate after Laurel Hubbard’s brief moment in the spotlight

As Laurel Hubbard entered the stage, the music stopped and the auditorium fell silent. She chalked her hands and clapped up a plume of dust. Then she closed her eyes, writes Lawrence Ostlere.

“Perhaps she was blocking out the glare. There were no fans in Tokyo’s International Forum but the bottom tier must have been a quarter full with reporters spilling out into the stalls and photographers’ lenses trained from every angle. Hubbard has tried desperately to avoid the spotlight over these past few months, so perhaps it was no surprise that when it finally found her she didn’t want to look.”

Katarina Johnson-Thompson seeks fairytale ending at Tokyo Olympics after injury agony in pandemic

The heptathlon is one of the more peculiar events at the Olympics, even among the less traditional ones, where the swimmers try not to swim and the horses try not to act like horses, writes Vithushan Ehantharajah in Tokyo.

“The oddity lies in the challenge. The toil to put yourself through 100 metres hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin throw and 800m across two days. Events that demand enough sacrifice on their own. Heptathletes generally break down their work into parts: ticking over the stronger suits, tuning up the weaker ones. Season after season of ensuring all seven plates are in the air, ready to spin in unison when the Olympics comes around.”

GB hockey hero Hinch hoping to repeat feat against Dutch

Maddie Hinch suspects her shootout heroics five years ago may still be preying on Holland’s minds after another standout performance kept Great Britain’s hopes of retaining their women’s Olympic hockey title alive.

The Dutch were unable to find a way past Hinch in an epic Rio 2016 final which went to penalties and Britain were once again grateful for their star goalkeeper after a 2-2 draw against Spain on a hot and sticky night in Tokyo.

Hinch kept her cool in this quarter-final, saving every penalty attempt while successful efforts from Hannah Martin and Sarah Jones secured a 2-0 victory for Britain, setting up a mouthwatering showdown against Holland on Wednesday.

Britain are a much-changed outfit since their success in Brazil - only Hinch and five others who were part of that triumph have made the trip to Japan - and Holland hold an edge after prevailing 1-0 in their group stage meeting.

But as she reflected on the last high-profile showdown between the teams, Hinch said: “It’s just an advantage (to us) that it’s still in the back of the minds of the Dutch, I’m sure they’ll say it’s not but it still probably is a little bit.

“The best bit is we gave them a bit of a scare in the group stages and I think that is also pretty helpful.

“It’s going to be tough and we’re going to have to look at why we didn’t get a result there, what we need to do better because they’re going to be better, they’ll have learned a lot from that game.

“You know what, we’re in the mix. We’re just going to go out there and give it our all. We’ve got people in the group that know how to do it.”
