The attack came a week before the UK’s biggest pride festival is due to take place in Brighton and Hove.

Defence secretary Wes Streeting said: “The home Secretary will obviously, with police chiefs, make the right determinations around what kind of policing presence we need.”

He added that such events in the UK were already “always well policed” and struck the right balance between public safety and allowing people to celebrate.

"We cannot rule out the possibility of copycat attacks," interior minister Alexander Dobrindt said, announcing he was raising Germany’s threat level.

The minister described the aftermath of the attack as a "horrific scene" as he thanked "brave people" who stepped in to help.

The attack took place a few hundred metres away from where the pride festival was being held. Victims were either in Tiergarten park or on their way to or from the pride festival.

British politicians have spoken of their horror at the “heartbreaking” attack.

Foreign secretary Ed Miliband said on X: “Horrified by the appalling attack in Berlin. My thoughts are with all those affected, and the entire LGBT+ community.

“The values of openness, tolerance and freedom are what unite us. I have spoken to @AussenMinDE (German foreign minister Johann Wadephul) to convey the UK’s solidarity: we stand with Germany.”

Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Sir Chris Bryant wrote: “This horrific event shows why we still need Pride. Freedom to live and love without shame, treated equally with others under the law, safe from discrimination and homophobic violence – that’s worth marching for. Proud too that Belfast Pride was such a success.”

Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty said the Christopher Street Day parade in Berlin “is deeply special to me and my husband” as he sent “love and solidarity to all my German friends and colleagues”.

Minister for equalities Simon Lightwood said on X: “The scenes from Berlin Pride are heartbreaking. My thoughts are with everyone affected, their loved ones and the wider LGBT+ community.

“Pride is about visibility, solidarity and the simple belief that everyone should be free to live openly and be themselves without fear. When that freedom is threatened, it reminds us just how much Pride still matters.”

Authorities have issued a wanted notice and warned people against approaching Abdul B, a German citizen with Lebanese roots, saying that he may be armed and dangerous.

One person was killed and 29 were injured in the suspected Islamist terror attack at a Pride event in Berlin on Saturday, which saw the perpetrator ram crowds with a car before attacking them with a knife.

The suspect was known to police and had "drawn ‌attention to himself through a high volume ⁠of criminal offences, ​radicalisation and affiliation ​with the Islamist ​scene", interior minister Alexander Dobrindt said.

He was sentenced to one year and 10 months in prison, which was switched to a non-custodial sentence due to a legal complaint.

The fatal attack at Berlin Pride is believed to be Islamic extremist terror, officials confirmed on Sunday.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said that the suspect rammed people with a car and "then attacked the crowd with some type of blade, it might have been a machete, and also severely injured those people".

He added that "everything we are seeing here indicates that we have experienced an Islamist attack".

He says the suspect is on the run and that a large number of officers from Berlin police and the federal police are working to find him.

Germany’s interior minister has revealed an estimated 29 people were injured in Saturday’s attack, Sky News reports.

He says the suspect, Abdul B, was born in Germany in 2005 and has a Lebanese background.
