While this figure will vary depending on actual energy consumption, it will represent an increase for most households at a time when numerous other living costs are already squeezing finances. However, nine million people across England, Wales and Northern Ireland will be entitled to some assistance with their bills during the colder months through the Winter Fuel Payment.

The benefit is paid to pensioners born on or before June 27, 1960 living in England, Wales or Northern Ireland and is worth between £100 and £300. September is an important period for those hoping to receive the payment, as it determines who qualifies - and who may be required to repay it.

The decision regarding eligibility is based on individual circumstances during a "qualifying week", which this year falls between September 21-27. This takes into account where a person resides, their age and various other criteria.

While all pensioners who satisfy the criteria during that week will receive the payment, some recipients will be required to repay it. Anyone with an annual income exceeding £35,000 must reimburse any money received, typically through adjustments to their tax code, or for those who submit a tax return, HMRC will incorporate it into their bill, reports Chronicle Live.

There is one way to avoid having to do this, and that is to opt out of receiving the money in advance. According to the government website, this means you will not receive the funds.

It said: "You can choose to opt out of receiving the Winter Fuel Payment. If you do not opt out and your total income is over £35,000, you will receive the Winter Fuel Payment but HMRC will take it back. You cannot return it yourself."

It also warned that there is a date to bear in mind should you wish to opt out - and it is just days away. To do so online, the deadline is Sunday, September 20, 2026, while those wishing to opt out by telephone face an even earlier cut-off of Friday, September 18.

    How to opt out

To opt out of receiving the Winter Fuel Payment you can either:

The website advised: "You’ll need to provide your National Insurance number when you use the online form or call the helpline. You’ll need to sign in to use the Manage your State Pension service. If you do not already have sign in details, you’ll be able to create them.

"Opting out will not affect your State Pension. You do not need to opt out every year. You will not receive the Winter Fuel Payment in future years unless you opt in again."

Should you wish to opt back in, you can do so by getting in touch with the Winter Fuel Payment Centre. To receive a payment for winter 2026 to 2027, you must contact them no later than 31 March 2027.
