A pinstickers’ guide to the 2026 Grand National

The day has finally arrived at Aintree with the horse racing’s blockbuster annual tradition and the UK’s biggest betting event, the Grand National, returning for the 2026 edition – 187 years after it was first run.

I Am Maximus is among the bookies’ favourite to reclaim the crown he took in 2024, having been runner-up to 33/1 shot Nick Rockett last year, and should Willie Mullins’ charge do so, he will be the first horse since the legendary Red Rum in the 1970s to regain the Grand National title having lost it.

As ever, iconic trainer Mullins has plenty of chances in the race, with eight horses running including Lecky Watson, Champ Kiely and his son Patrick on Grangeclare West, as well as the 2024 partnership of Paul Townend and I Am Maximus reuniting. However, the likes of Dan Skelton’s Panic Attack and Jagwar for Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero are also fancied. There are a number of Grand National free bets available from the best betting sites and you can access various free bet offers here.

There has been sad news already at Aintree this week however, with Gold Dancer being put down moments after breaking his back while winning the Mildmay Novices’ Chase on Ladies Day. Gold Dancer had managed to stay on its feet following an awkward landing on the final fence to win by four and three-quarter lengths but received on-course treatment by the Aintree veterinary team, which confirmed the injuries were fatal.

Movement in the betting markets as others join I Am Maximus

I Am Maximus has been the standout favourite all week but the markets are starting to move and suddenly, Willie Mullins’ charge isn’t out front on his own.

The 2024 winner is still trading at around 8/1 but you can get 9/1 in some places now. Meanwhile, Panic Attack – with Harry Skelton aboard and Dan Skelton training – has come right in to 8/1 and is slightly shorter in a lot of places.

Jagwar, who will be ridden by Mark Walsh, is also priced around 8/1, so we now have three co-favourites! Grangeclare West, another Mullins horse, is not far behind at 9/1 generally.

I Am Maximus is no longer the lone favourite

Aintree horse Gold Dancer suffers fatal injury while winning race

The racehorse Gold Dancer has been put down after breaking his back while winning the Mildmay Novices' Chase at Aintree on Friday.

Gold Dancer had managed to stay on its feet following an awkward landing on the final fence, with the 100-30 joint-favourite under Paul Townend crossing the line ahead of Regent's Stroll by four and three-quarter lengths.

It was immediately clear, however, that Gold Dancer had suffered a serious injury when the horse made a mistake going over the final hurdle and its back legs dragged along the ground.

The seven-year-old, trained by Willie Mullins, received on-course treatment by the Aintree veterinary team and screens were erected around him after crossing the line. But it was then confirmed that Gold Dancer had been put down.

Racegoers arriving for the big day

The crowds are streaming into Aintree with a little over four hours until the big race.

The weather looks a little mixed, with potential showers and a light breeze but that hasn’t put the punters off – and it was sunny this morning, to be fair
