AmaWaterways has launched a new post-cruise land tour to Machu Picchu for guests on its Magdalena River sailings.
Guests booked on AmaWaterways’ river cruise in Colombia will be able to book the excursion from April 2027.
Passengers will disembark as usual in Cartagena, Colombia, and those opting for the tour will then fly to Lima in neighbouring Peru for a five-night extension.
The experience starts in Lima, where guests can explore the neighbourhoods of Miraflores and Barranco with a local guide before flying to Cusco to learn about the historic architecture, Inca heritage and try Peruvian cuisine.
At the heart of the tour is a journey to Machu Picchu aboard either the legendary Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train, or first-class Inca Rail, accompanied by a local guide.
Other highlights include visiting the Sacred Valley and Ollantaytambo, the ancient Maras salt pans, Moray’s distinctive agricultural terraces, Cusco’s historic centre, the former Inca temple of Koricancha, and the hilltop fortress of Sacsayhuaman.
The five-night Boutique Machu Picchu package costs an additional £4,081 per person, rising to £6,620 per person for the Luxury version.
Prices for the seven-night Magic of Colombia, Barranquilla to Cartagena river cruise start from £5,176 per person based on a departure on 15 May 2027.
Catherine Powell, chief executive of AmaWaterways, said: “Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic places to visit on earth. It is so exciting to add this highly curated experience to our offerings and reflects how AmaWaterways is evolving its approach to luxury river cruising.
“We have always believed the best and most memorable experiences are those that connect our guests deeply to the places they visit. With our first ever Peruvian journey, we are bringing together exceptional hotels, food and service in an unforgettable location.”
AmaWaterways is the only major river cruise line that sails on the Magadelena River.
It comes as interest in river cruises continues to rise.
Research from the Cruise Lines International Association trade body highlights that 21 new river cruise ships are set to enter service in 2027.
The vessels will operate across rivers and waterways around the world, including the Rhine, Danube, Douro, Seine, Mekong and the Amazon.
The 2027 additions include three ships from AmaWaterways - AmaRudi, AmaFiora and AmaMaya - while Celebrity Cruises will introduce Celebrity Compass and Celebrity Seeker as part of its move into the sector.
Emerald Cruises will add Emerald Lumi on the Seine and Emerald Nova on the Douro, with Uniworld introducing S.S. Audrey, S.S. Marlene and S.S. São Rafael.
