Cruise line AE Expeditions is offering passengers a rare chance to ski in one of the world’s most remote destinations, Antarctica, during its sailings.

Experienced skiers and snowboarders will be able to venture into the continent’s extreme landscapes from this November.

Skiing is led by qualified mountain guides and, conditions permitting, passengers can head out up to twice a day during shore landings, with six or more outings possible during a voyage.

Passengers will get the chance to traverse across remote, snow-capped peaks, home to a mix of long open slopes and alpine bowls. The cruise itself will stop in pristine bays filled with floating icebergs, penguin rookeries and possibly even whales.

Previous trips have included touring and skiing from Mount Tennant on Ronge Island, with a 700m descent, as well as 800m from Mount Hoegh to Andvord Bay.

AE Expeditions describes it as “an adventurous alternative to the familiar Alpine circuit – and about as far from Lech and Courchevel as you can get.”

Participants need to be advanced skiers or snowboarders, plus have off-piste experience and a high level of fitness.

Guides will teach the required touring skills such as ice axe and rope use, plus how to move in avalanche terrain.

A ski and snowboard tour on the expedition’s Antarctic sailings cost an extra £1,022 per person.

Prices for a 12-night “Across the Antarctic Circle”cruise, plus a one-night stay pre-sailing, start from £14,898.

Sailings depart from Ushuaia, Argentina aboard the Sylvia Earle and Greg Mortimer ships between November and February.

The fare includes house wine and beer at dinner and all shore excursions. Passengers must bring their own ski equipment.
