Wimbledon 2022: Emma Raducanu wins Centre Court debut as Andy Murray starts with victory

Wimbledon enters day three at the All England Club but home favourite Emma Raducanu is out of the tournament after a 6-3 6-3 defeat to Caroline Garcia sealed a second-round exit from the Championships. Hopes were high for Raducanu as she returned to Centre Court but was second best to Garcia as the Frenchwoman displayed clean hitting and power in taking the victory in straight sets.

Andy Murray will look to lift the mood, with the two-time Wimbledon champion next in actin on Centre with the prospect of some late drama against the big-serving John Isner. Earlier, Novak Djokovic raced to a 6-1 6-4 6-2 win against the Australian 26-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis, that was as comfortable as the scoreline suggests.

Cameron Norrie (vs Jaume Munar), Heather Watson (vs Qiang Wang) and Harriet Dart (vs Rebeka Masarova) will look to keep up the momentum from an impressive first two days for British players at SW19. The journey is over for Ryan Peniston, however, after the 26-year-old debutant fell in straight sets to experienced American Steve Johnson.

Elsewhere the exciting Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz (vs Tallon Griekspoor) and women’s world No2 Ons Jabeur (vs Katarzyna Kawa) take to Court 2 and Court 3 respectively this afternoon, while Wimbledon champions Angelique Kerber and Garbine Muguruza also feature on Court 2.

Wimbledon 2022: Andy Murray 4-6 4-3 John Isner*

Murray places a lovely backhand winner onto the line but a poor miss trying to clip a forehand down the line sets Isner up at 15-30. Isner’s return drifts long as Murray finds the first serve, and then again as the American nets on the forehand out wide.

40-30, and another brilliant pass from Murray! The backhand from the baseline lands on the line and that’s another nice escape from a tricky spot.

Wimbledon 2022: *Andy Murray 4-6 3-3 John Isner

Murray wheels away in frustration after being unable to do anything with the Isner serve out wide. Murray then manages to get his racket onto an Isner smash, but the American puts it away at the second attempt. Two Isner aces seal the hold.

Murray must remind himself that he is still in this. The chances will come, even if it’s hard to remember that when Isner serves up this many aces.

Wimbledon 2022: Andy Murray 4-6 2-1 John Isner*

Murray cries out in frustration after a return from Isner catches the baseline, before he finds himself facing 0-30 after a double fault. Isner chucks a return long, before a good second serve from Murray catches the line and Isner is unable to keep it in play.

30-30, and an ace from Murray! And another, this time out wide! Solid recovery job there. Very important.

Wimbledon 2022: *Andy Murray 4-6 1-1 John Isner

Isner holds to 15 with three aces. He blinked on a forehand smash that he put a few feet wide but apat from that it was pretty faultless.

Wimbledon 2022: Andy Murray 4-6 1-0 John Isner*

Good start from Murray, as he places two backhand winners past Isner to get to 40-0. Murray challenges a Isner ball that he thought went long, but rather caught the baseline. Murray has a chance at the net but his drop shot does not clear and Isner is back in it at 40-30. A wild swing from Isner at a Murray second serve finds the net and Murray gets in front.

Wimbledon 2022: *Andy Murray 4-6 John Isner

The first return from Murray is sliced wide, before Isner sends a wild forehand out for an unforced error.

Murray picks up Isner’s next serve and hangs a hopeful lob high that drops inside the baseline. Isner takes a moment before crashing it down for a winner.

An ace from Isner. Nothing Murray could do there.

Set point at 40-15, and Murray nets from the baseline.

Well, that was coming from the moment Isner broke early. Murray with work to do, but we did expect a long one here. This was never going to be straight sets.

Wimbledon 2022: Andy Murray 4-5 John Isner*

Wheels from Murray to pick up Isner’s slice and send the backhand down the line. The forehand then fires a winner crosscourt to get to 30-0, followed by an ace up the middle. Murray then pulls out another one. Isner challenges it but it’s a mile out.

Isner cranks a backhand winner, but a strange return from the American off Murray’s second serve offers the hold.

Now, can Murray break to stay in the first set?
