Ambassador Cruise Line has purchased an older ship from rival line Oceania as part of plans to expand into the German market.

The cruise line has acquired Oceania Sirena and revealed plans to rename it Ambella under Ambassador Kreuzfahrten, a new, German-focused brand.

The 670-guest ship will continue to operate in the Oceania Cruises fleet until spring 2028 under the terms of a leaseback agreement. It will then join Ambassador from summer 2028 as Ambella.

Homeporting in Bremerhaven and Kiel, Ambella will be adult-only and fully German-language.

It is expected to operate two repositioning cruises and 11 destination-focused itineraries between May and September 2028, visiting ports across northern Europe and the Baltics alongside selected sailings to southern Europe.

Ambella will also support a new long-term partnership between Ambassador Cruise Line and the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE), the non-profit organisation that administers Semester at Sea, a scheme that allows students to combine academic study with international travel.

Under the agreement, Ambella will host Semester at Sea programmes for approximately eight months of each year following the German summer season, initially from September 2028 through April 2029. The partnership is expected to run for an initial 10-year period.

Ambassador has been busy expanding into Europe in recent years.

The cruise line merged with French cruise operator Compagnie Française de Croisières (CFC) in January 2025 and brought Renaissance into the fleet.

CFC has since rebranded as Ambassador Croisières on 15 September 2026, bringing the French operation under the Ambassador umbrella.

Christian Verhounig, chief executive of Ambassador Cruise Line, said: “The acquisition of Oceania Sirena, her future introduction as Ambella and the launch of Ambassador Kreuzfahrten mark a major milestone in our ambition to establish Ambassador as Europe’s leading cruise operator offering affordable quality experiences for the silver market.

While the CFC merger gave the cruise line greater scale, Verhounig said entering Germany with Ambassador Kreuzfahrten is the next step.

He added: “Germany is Europe’s largest cruise market, but scale alone is not the reason we are entering it.

“We see a clear opportunity to offer German guests something distinctive: the intimacy and authenticity of a smaller ship, an exceptional adult-only experience and a product that combines tradition, service and destination discovery at an accessible price.”
