Passengers on Lumo trains in the UK will soon be able to log on to Elon Musk's Starlink wifi while they travel.

Lumo, the budget, all-electric rail operator, has announced the introduction of Starlink wifi technology across its East Coast Main Line fleet this autumn.

Starlink, operated by SpaceX, is a high-speed, low-latency satellite internet service that delivers fast broadband using a low Earth orbit.

The rail operator will install the internet system on its trains in partnership with manufacturer Hitachi, connectivity provider Icomera and rolling stock lease provider Beacon Rail, for faster, more reliable connectivity.

Customers travelling between London King’s Cross, Stevenage, Newcastle, Morpeth, Edinburgh, Falkirk and Glasgow will enjoy the “significant step forward in onboard connectivity”, said Lumo.

According to Lumo, the introduction of Starlink technology will help deliver a “more consistent, high-quality connection” across the East Coast Main Line.

It added that reliable onboard wifi is “increasingly important” for customers choosing to travel by train, with traditional trackside and mobile-based systems affected by coverage gaps and infrastructure limitations.

The rail operator already offers 5G-enabled wifi on its new West Coast services operating between London Euston and Stirling.
