Michael Carrick has admitted Manchester United still need to strengthen this summer but they will not be splashing the cash on the level of their Premier League rivals.

United have so far spent around £85million on Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow, but after another big summer of spending elsewhere they are the only one of the Premier League’s ‘big six’ still never to have broken the £100m mark on a player.

United need to build depth ahead of a return to the Champions League, and their midfield reinforcements come after Casemiro’s exit.

“I think we’ve done really good business and we’ve got really some top, top, top players,” Carrick said at United’s pre-season training camp in the Republic of Ireland.

“We’re delighted with that. We always want to improve. We want more, we need more, we keep looking for how we can do that. That never stops.”

Celtic midfielder Arne Engels is set to complete a move to West Ham, manager Martin O’Neill has confirmed.

Celtic rejected a £25million bid from Nottingham Forest for the Belgium international in the winter transfer window and Engels was keen for a move to English football.

O’Neill said: “West Ham wanted him to be available for the opening day of the season. Naturally disappointed, really, that he’s leaving the football club, he’s done very well for us.

“And it’s hard to dissuade him of that. If it hadn’t come up, I think he’d have been happy. Even though the offer came in very late from Nottingham Forest in January, he never moaned about it at all.

“So it’s an opportunity for him and it’s really hard for him to turn it down.”

Chelsea’s deadline to receive bids for Enzo Fernandez passed by without Manchester City making an offer for the midfielder, but this transfer saga may not be over yet.

The Blues expect Fernandez to be part of Xabi Alonso’s squad for the coming season but The Independent has reported that Fernandez still wants to leave and there is interest from all sides in getting a deal done.

While Fernandez is Enzo Maresca’s top target, Miguel Delaney reported in his Inside Football newsletter that relations between Chelsea and Manchester City are far from smooth, given the frostiness that still lingers from Maresca’s exit.

City could yet test Chelsea’s resolve if they return with a £120m offer and City could also be about to receive significant transfer fees for Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders and Savinho.

Arsenal have expressed an interest in signing Jarell Quansah and have opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen over a move for the England international.

Mikel Arteta wants to add a defender to his squad following the injury to William Saliba and there is a gap between Arsenal and Aston Villa when it comes to the valuation of Ezri Konsa.

Quansah, who joined Leverkusen from Liverpool last summer, can play at both centre-back and right-back, so fits what Arteta wants from a member of his defence.

Italian side Como have expressed their interest in signing Chelsea striker Liam Delap, according to the Mail.

Chelsea are set to demand £50m for the 23-year-old striker, who is also of interest to several Premier League teams.

Como will be playing in the Champions League next season under Cesc Fabregas and have also agreed a deal to sign Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah.

Meanwhile, Napoli have agreed a deal Benoit Badiashile on an initial loan.

TalkSport reported that Coventry are keen on signing 20-year-old defender Josh Acheampong, while the Independent understands Hull City have interest in Tosin Adarabioyo, but he wants to stay.

Crystal Palace have announced the signing of highly rated right-sided player Anan Khalaili from Belgian Union Saint-Gilloise on a long-term deal.

Khalaili, 21, arrives in a £21m deal and can play on the right side of midfield or in attack. But do Palace see him as a replacement for Daniel Munoz?

Mikel Arteta said he is feeling “comfortable” about his contract situation at Arsenal and told fans they have nothing to worry about.

Arteta, who led Arsenal to Premier League glory last season, has entered the final 12 months of his deal but expects to extend his deal soon.

“They don’t have to worry about any of that, because I want to be here,” he said last night.

“I am extremely happy. I feel very grateful to work with the people that I work with and when we have the possibility, we will resolve that. And that’s it.

“There is always another priority, I think! That’s the way we have been treating it, I think because everybody feels comfortable that the time on the contract is not going to be an issue.

“I think because my will, certainly, is to be here and I am very happy here. My feeling from the club is the same one. That is why everyone is doing things in a really organic way.”
